The Indonesian contingent is certain not to include the name of his main runner, Muhammad Zohri in the 2019 SEA games in the upcoming Philippines. This was confirmed by the Chairman of the All Indonesian Athletics Association (PB PASI) Executive Board Bob Hasan.
Bob admitted his side deliberately did not reduce the runner from Lombok. Not related to technical or health problems, but rather to the regeneration of athletes.
“Love the opportunity to young people, like Richi, Rico, 17-18 (years) we send it. We are not about winning or losing, there are young stars,” he said as quoted by sport.tempo.co.
It reflects on events in the past. Like the case of Mardi Lesatri, a famous runner in the late 80s to early 90s. Where at that time Mardi became the mainstay of Indonesia in the 100 meters SEA Games event. Noted he managed to gain four gold and one silver from the 1987 edition to 1993. Unfortunately, neither the coating nor the next generation is able to maintain the champion’s legacy.
The same thing was also felt by Suryo Agung, Indonesia’s mainstay runner at the 2007 and 2009 SEA Games. Because of his speed he was able to bring Indonesia to victory in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m numbers. But after its heyday ended, Indonesia’s achievements immediately declined dramatically.
He hopes the same thing does not happen to Zohri. He does not want Indonesia to rely again on the emergence of talents that come every few years.
“That’s all one, that’s not allowed, so we have to have 10 Zohri, 20 Zohri so. So we have to have dozens, not just one,” he said.
Apart from that, Bob said world athletes like Zohri didn’t need to take part in the SEA Games.
