The Tokyo 2020 Olympics was officially postponed, after the Japanese Government together with the IOC officially announced it on Tuesday (3/24), due to the coronavirus pandemic (covid-19). The Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) claimed to have prepared, and gave encouragement to the athletes.
Through the Secretary of Menpora, Gatot S Dewa Broto, Kemenpora said it was not surprised by the decision on the delay.
“We are not surprised, because the issue has been rolling for a long time but Indonesia’s position like the NOC, just flowing,” said Gatot. as reported by cnnindonesia.com
“We will review the Olympic budget, if not, it will be left over. Then it will also be paralympic. In the joint statement, it is clear that the Olympics and Paralympics together.”
Gatot also hopes that all Indonesian athletes who have qualified for the 2020 Olympics and canceled competing to remain enthusiastic in training.
“Not only are Indonesian athletes experienced but all over the world. Keep practicing, be enthusiastic, and keep up the conditions in the midst of a situation like this,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chairperson of the Indonesian National Olympic Committee (NOC) Raja Sapta Oktohari, said he would soon formally write to the IOC, to get further instructions, the technical issue of delaying the biggest multi-event in the world. Including how the continuation of qualifications that are already running.
Indonesia has confirmed six athletes to qualify for the 2020 Olympics. They are Lalu Muhammad Zohri from athletics, Eko Yuli Irawan from 69 kg weightlifting, Windy Cantika Aisah from 49 kg weightlifting, Vidya Rafika from shooting water numbers Putri rifle, and Riau Egha Agatha and Diananda Chairunnisa from archery.
“After this we will formally ask to ask the technical delay. Is the qualification process terminated and continue to use the results now or there are other changes,” he said.
