After waiting for a long time, the highest federation of Malaysian badminton, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) finally found the Director of Badminton Engineering Malaysia. Wong Choong Hann is elected as the new Technical Director.
The Malaysian badminton legend will begin his assignment on January 1st, 2019. Choong Hann is targeted by the federation to be able to bring home the gold medal at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics 2020.
“This designation is to complete the existing coaching structure with the five trainers to report to Choong Hann, but Choong Hann is only responsible for the structure of the national squad development,” said BAM President Mohamad Norza Zakaria as reported by indosport.com (10/10/18).
“Of course, one of his main tasks is to win gold in Tokyo 2020 but to place it as a Key Performance Indicator (KPI), we must talk to him first. This must be based on the current situation and the ability of the player now. “Added Norza.
Previously, the Federation had expressed if it had a number of candidates to become technical directors. One of them is the legend of Indonesian badminton, Rexy Mainaky. But somehow BAM then entrusted Choong Hann.
“Selain Choong Hann, kami memiliki beberapa kandidat lain termasuk para pelatih luar negeri. Tetapi melihat situasi saat ini dan kendala keuangan, Choong Hann adalah pilihan terbaik.”
“I believe Choong Hann can work well with all the coaches to reach the goal of Tokyo 2020,” added Norza.
Choong Hann’s name is not a foreign name in the world of badminton. He is a former mainstay male singles player of Malaysia. Choong Hann himself was ranked number one in the world in 2002.
Besides that, Choong Hann was also the 2003 silver medalist at the Badminton World Championship and successfully brought Malaysia to silver in the 1998 and 2002 Thomas Cups.
While Rexy himself is also not a new person in badminton Malaysia because the legend of Indonesian badminton was once a male and female double head coach in Malaysia for seven years (2005-2012).
Rexy’s achievement in becoming a coach in Malaysia was to bring Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong to reach the world number one ranking.
