The Indonesian Squash National Team set a target of one gold medal from jumbo numbers at the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines. The target is quite realistic considering that Indonesia has a good trend in the previous SEA Games.
“In the SEA Games event we will target one gold. And the target is from the jumbo number that is indeed our mainstay,” said Squash national team manager, Nuryanto, reported from Akurat.co.
The tragedy reflects on the success of the Indonesian contingent at the 2017 SEA Games in Malaysia. At that time Indonesia managed to go home with a silver medal from the men’s jumbo number.
Because of this success Indonesia is trying to target a higher target. Especially now they appear with a more mature preparation.
On the other hand the team preparation process is open without obstacles. Nuryanto complained about the delay in disbursing funds until the end of last October. As a result, for training athletes must spend personal funds during the preparation period. Including when undergoing trials in Singapore, athletes have to spend their own money.
“Athletes and coaches are waiting for the second tranche of funds. Today, it’s been two months that athletes and coaches haven’t received an allowance. So for the trial they (athletes) use private funds first,” he explained.
Meanwhile the obstacles that arise are not a reason for athletes not to maximize preparation. As one of the Chess Yulia women’s squash athletes admitted. Yulia is a female athlete who is going to play in multiple numbers, namely the mix team, double jumblo, and women’s team.
“Athletes and coaches are waiting for the second tranche of funds. Today, it’s been two months that athletes and coaches haven’t received an allowance. So for the trial they (athletes) use private funds first,” explained the athlete who is currently ranked 157th the world.
