The Asian Para Games 2018 may be remembered by National athletic athletes, Rizal Bagus Saktiono. Before getting silver from the T47 runner 200 meter number with a time of 22.36 seconds, he’s only a seller of eucalyptus oil. Since Suryanto’s father passed away, his family’s economy has continued to decline. Rizal had to fight to help the family’s survival even since he was two years old.
The physically disabled athlete with the condition of the left hand without the wrist must learn to survive from all the economic crush that ensnares his family at a young age. His mother, Pujiastuti, taught him to sell eucalyptus oil.
“Before I became an athlete, I helped my mom by selling. I really felt how it is to be poor. Back then, if there was no training, I helped the mother selling eucalyptus oil, “said Riza told CNN Indonesia (9/10/2018).
With all these shortcomings, Rizal never had the wish to become an athlete and even an Asian Games silver medalist. His meeting with the Chair of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC), Senny Marbun in 2016 after being introduced by his colleagues at the rehabilitation center for persons with disabilities in Solo, truly changed the course of his life.
Competition for the National Paralympic Sports Week (Peparnas) 2016 in West Java, became Rizal’s debut on the National scene. His work as an athlete continues to finally represent Indonesia in the ASEAN Para Games 2017 in Malaysia.
At that time, he won a silver in the 200 meter number T47 category and also a gold medal in the 4 × 100 meter relay run number T42-47. Rizal’s time record also continued to sharpen after the event.
After two years working as an athlete, he finally reached a higher level, the Asian Para Games. In the inaugural event, he only lost to Chinese Hao Wang who won the gold medal with a record of 21.71 seconds. In the meantime, the bronze medal was won by Ahmad Hojaghlou from Iran with a time of 22.53 seconds.
