August 17, apart from being celebrated as the Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia, is also confirmed to be a day that the badminton pair Tontowi Ahmad / Liliyana Natsir will never forget. Why? The reason is, four years ago, on the same date, both of them managed to carve a golden achievement for the country.
This special moment was created at the 2016 Rio Brazil Olympics. The heroic story of the two was carved when they won the Olympic gold medal, still at the celebration of Indonesia’s 71st Independence Day at that time.
At that time, Tontowi / Liliyana truly felt joy, who at that time appeared as the best in the badminton mixed doubles, Rio Olympics. Moreover, this achievement seemed to be a medium for their revenge, for the failure at the 2012 London Olympics, where they failed miserably, and returned empty-handed.
What’s more, the success of Tontowi / Liliyana is also a special gift for the Indonesian people. The reason is that at the same time all Indonesian people are celebrating Independence Day.
The final match at the 2016 Rio Olympics, indeed took place on August 17th. Taking place at Riocentro Pavilion 4, Tontowi / Liliyana challenged the Malaysian representative Chan Peng Soon / Goh Liu Ying.
The match itself was tight, especially since the supporters of the two countries were both present in the arena. The two sides collided with each other, providing support to the two pairs competing in the field.
However, mental maturity seems to be the key for Tontowi / Liliyana to win over Chan / Goh. The match was completed, in just two sets. Tontowi / Liliyana won with a score of 21-14 and 21-12.
This gold medal is also an extraordinary thing for Tontowi / Liliyana, because, this is the first time for them to be at the biggest sports event in the universe. Especially for Liliyana, who in 2008 could only win silver, when paired with Nova Widianto.
This is certainly a long wait for Liliyana, who has achieved various world achievements with different partners. Meanwhile for Tontowi, the gold medal was a proving moment for him, who at that time also experienced a decline.
Throughout the 2016 Rio Olympics, Tontowi / Liliyana’s steps were indeed convincing. Since the group phase, both of them were unbeaten. Even until the final round, Tontowi / Liliyana always managed to win matches in only two straight sets.
